After a long, snowy, frozen winter, on April 12, 2015, the sun returned and warmed the streets of Lehighton, PA as volunteers set the scene for the inaugural Lehighton Officers Down 5K. This event, though a first time occurrence for Lehighton, has been popping up across the U.S. to support our fallen brothers in blue, as well as their families who sacrifice peace of mind every day when their loved ones leave for work.
Thanks to Penn’s Peak Radio’s Layne “The Doc” Roberts, upbeat music filled the air as runners and walkers arrived, stretched, and warmed up. There were snacks and water for participants, as well as free coffee and many promotional items for sale. After a few heartfelt speeches and moment of silence, participants migrated to the start line as police vehicles and mounted police made a spectacular showing along the first leg of the race.
The start was a sight to see as the immense throng of participants took off up the hill. Runners began crossing the finish line right around the 19 minute mark. One after another, runners and walkers of all ages crossed the finish line in the next hour. Post race, spectators and racers milled around the party area, getting more refreshments and photo opps with MELVIN, the Phantoms mascot. Many cruised down to Joey B’s in Palmerton to continue the party where a % of that afternoon’s proceeds also went to the Officers Down 5K Foundation.
The volunteers, sponsors, and glorious spring weather made the inaugural event a success. Regional EMS & Critical Care is proud to have sponsored and been a part of this amazing race and are truly touched by the outpouring of support the Officers Down Foundation and law enforcement has received as a result
